After the election
The four center-right parties together had 171 seats in the Reichstag, the two left parties together had 154. 175 votes were required for a majority. The Ny Demokrati party, founded on February 4, 1991, had 25 seats. She abstained in the election of the Prime Minister and thus made possible the election of Carl Bildt . This formed a minority government .
The legislative period from 1991 to 1994 was the last three-year legislative period; since then the Reichstag has been elected for a four-year term (Chapter 3 § 3 of the Constitution of Sweden ).
