European elections in Sweden 2019
The European elections in Sweden took place on May 26, 2019. It was part of the 2019 European elections taking place across the European Union .
In Sweden, 20 seats were initially awarded in the European Parliament , but 21 members were elected. A mandate holder from Sweden will move into the European Parliament after the UK leaves the EU .
Election mode
The elections took place according to proportional representation , with all of Sweden forming a single constituency. As with the elections to the Swedish parliament , there was a 4% threshold clause . The distribution of the seats on the lists was carried out according to a modified Sainte-Laguë procedure with first division by 1.2.
The parties made lists. The election was made by placing the voting slip of the party to be elected in the envelope. For parties that achieved at least 1% of the vote in one of the last elections, the ballot papers were printed free of charge and displayed in the polling station. Parties that failed to do so had to have the ballot papers printed at their own expense and deal with the distribution themselves. Freedom of choice was ensured by the display of blank ballot papers in the polling stations on which voters could register a party. Since all entries are registered in the election results, this also offers the possibility of voting for non-existent parties, which regularly happens to a small extent in all elections in Sweden.
The voters can also influence the order of the electoral list to a limited extent. You can optionally tick a candidate on the list or, if you use blank ballot papers, write down the name of the candidate. If a list candidate is thereby marked with at least 5% of the votes of his party, he will be considered in the allocation of mandates before the other candidates on the list, i. that is, he is placed at the top of the list. If this is achieved by several candidates, the allocation is made in descending order of personal votes.
