On November 9, 2018, the ALDE party and the La République en Marche party agreed on an electoral alliance for the 2019 European elections . Originally, Macron wanted to found his own parliamentary group and - in addition to the liberals - established contacts with conservative, social democratic and green parties across Europe.
In May 2019, the chairman of the ALDE group of Guy Verhofstadt announced in a debate ahead of the 2019 European elections that the ALDE group intends to dissolve after the election and to enter into a new alliance with the Renaissance electoral alliance . This was also followed by the alliance of USR and PLUS, so that the group was temporarily known as ALDE plus Renaissance plus USR Plus . The final name - renew Europe - was announced on June 12, 2019. There was also a choice between “inspire” and “inspire europe”. The main aim of the new name should have been to avoid the negative connotation of the word “liberal” in the French context.
