Sophie in 't Veld
Sophie Helena in 't Veld (born September 13, 1963 in Vollenhove , Overijssel province ) is a Dutch politician of the Democrats 66 (D66) and MEP . She is Chairwoman of the Board of the European Parliament Platform for Secularism in Politics (EPPSP).
Life
In 't Veld studied history at the University of Leiden from 1982 to 1991 . From 1990 to 1993 she worked as a freelance translator. In addition to her mother tongue, in 't Veld speaks English, German, French, Italian and Greek. In 1994 she became a personal assistant to MEP JLA Boogerd-Quaak (D66). From 1996 to 2004 she worked as a secretary for the ELDR parliamentary group.
In 't Veld headed the Belgian section of D66 from 2000 to 2003. Surprisingly for observers, she was nominated by her party as the top candidate for the European Parliament elections in 2004 . Since D66 won only one seat in this election, she was the only female European parliamentarian in her party for five years. For the European elections in 2009 she was again nominated by her party as a top candidate and re-elected to the European Parliament.
In 2011, in 't Veld in Oslo received the International Humanist Award from the International Humanist and Ethical Union . The honor was justified with the commitment to the right to privacy as well as the rights of women and homosexual people as well as the emergence of the European platform for secular politics, the European Parliament Platform for Secularism in Politics .
Sophie in 't Veld was again the top candidate for the D66 in the 2014 European elections and was elected to the European Parliament for a third legislative period.
