Italia Viva (short IV ; translated "Living Italy") is an Italian party of the political center that was founded in September 2019 by Matteo Renzi .

After the coalition of Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S; "Five Star Movement") and Lega Nord ( Cabinet Conte I ) broke in August 2019 , several leading politicians of the Partito Democratico spoke out in favor of a new coalition the M5S. The former Prime Minister of Italy Matteo Renzi also advocated the continuation of a government led by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte .

A few days after the formation of the Conte II cabinet , Renzi left the PD and founded his own party with Italia Viva . As a reason, he cited the lack of vision of PD in his view.

Several leading PD politicians such as Maria Elena Boschi and Roberto Giachetti joined the party after it was founded . Donatella Conzatti, a senator from Forza Italia, joined Italia Viva. A few days after its founding, the party now had 25 members of the Chamber of Deputies (currently 26) and 15 senators . Two ministers in the Conte II government, Teresa Bellanova and Elena Bonetti , also joined Renzi's party.

Renzi announced that he would continue to support Conte's government and present a comprehensive political program for his party within a month. Research showed that Renzi's step did not come unprepared. Internet addresses with the name of the new party were commissioned and acquired at the beginning of August 2019 and thus before the Conte II cabinet was formed.

On October 20, 2019, Nicola Danti , who had previously belonged to the Partito Democratico , a member of the European Parliament, joined Italia Viva, helping the party to its first seat in the assembly. He has been a member of the liberal group Renew Europe since February 2020 . The party is also represented in the European Parliament by Sandro Gozi . He has been a member of parliament since February 4, 2020 and was elected on the list of La République en Marche in France .

At the beginning of October 2019, Renzi called for the symbol for the party to be chosen using an online vote.

On October 19, Renzi presented the party's official logo during the Leopolda annual meeting in Florence. It was the second of a total of three drafts, which could be selected by the supporters of the party in an online vote. The successful logo is marked by a stylized seagull, which flies over the words ITALIA VIVA . The central colors of the logo are fuchsia, orange, blue and yellow.

Matteo Renzi's founding of a new party was resolutely rejected and criticized by various Italian politicians. PD chairman Nicola Zingaretti described this as a "mistake"; Dario Franceschini , who, like Renzi, belongs to the center-wing wing of the PD, but remained in the party, as a “big problem”.
