Joseph Lepore
Joseph Lepore (* 1967 in New York City ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass , also composition ) of modern jazz of Italian descent.
Live and act
Lepore grew up in Salerno after his parents returned to Italy. He attended the local conservatory before moving to Rome to work in the city's jazz scene. In Italy he played with musicians such as Bob Dorough , Antonio Faraò , Roberto Gatto , George Garzone , Steve Grossman , Tom Kirkpatrick , David Liebman , Mike Mainieri , Bob Mover , Romano Mussolini , Jimmy Owens , Enrico Pieranunzi , Tony Scott , Gary Smulyan and Eliot Zigmund . He also worked for TV shows and taught bass and music theory in Salerno and Rome. Between 1997 and 1999 he belonged to the band of saxophonist Rosario Giuliani , with whom he appeared at numerous festivals.
He then returned to New York City and performed regularly with Ehud Asherie and Tommaso Cappellato in Trio 65 in the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center . In 2000 the album Music by Billy Strayhorn was released . He also worked with numerous musicians on the New York jazz scene. He eventually got the opportunity to teach at the Ecole Nationale de Musique in Abidjan ; he toured Africa in 2004 as part of the State Department and Kennedy Center's American Music Abroad programs with singer Cynthia Scott . In 2007 he returned to the USA with the Charlie Porter Quartet; In 2008 Greg Osby brought him into his band (album 9 Levels ). In 2010 he presented his debut album Journal (Inner Circle Music) with his own compositions, on which Lance Murphy (tenor saxophone), Tim Collins (vibraphone) and Nasheet Waits (drums) participated. It received positive reviews in Bass Music Magazine, JazzTimes, and All About Jazz ("a thoroughly entertaining performance").
In the following years Lepore u. a. with Mark Turner , Joe Lovano and Jonathan Gee ( Dragonfly , 2012); In 2011 he founded the trio Kinesis with Eric Person and Shinnosuke Takahashi (album 2012), he also played with Melissa Aldana ( Second Cycle , 2012). He took double bass lessons with Ron Carter in 2013/2014; 2012–15 he played with Paul Bollenback ( Portraits in Space and Time , 2014), then in the trio of Tim Armacost and Michael Petrosino . Currently (2019) he is also a member of the Jon Davis Trio and the David Gibson Quintet.
