Paul Bollenback

Paul Norris Bollenback (born June 6, 1959 in Hinsdale , Illinois ) is an American jazz musician ( guitar , composition ) of modern jazz .

Live and act

Bollenback grew up in Hastings-on-Hudson , a New York suburb. When he was seven years old, his father gave him his first guitar. When he was 11 years old, his family moved to New Delhi. After returning to New York City, he played electric guitar in rock bands in the New York area. Under the influence of the music of Miles Davis , he began to occupy himself with jazz. From 1975 he lived with his family in Washington, DC before beginning his studies at the University of Miami . He then had private lessons with Asher Zlotnik. His first recordings were made in 1987 when he was a member of Gary Thomas ' band , Seventh Quadrant , on whose album he worked for Enja . From 1990 he played with Joey DeFrancesco , with whom he worked for 16 years. For Joey DeFrancesco's album Reboppin ' (1991) he contributed the compositions "Wookies's Revenge" and "Romancin' the Moon". In 1993 he received a scholarship from the Virginia Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts , with which he wrote New Music for Three Jazz Guitars .

Bollenback presented a series of albums under his own name; Original Visions was released in 1995 on Challenge Records , with the participation of Gary Thomas, Joey DeFrancesco, Ed Howard and Terri Lyne Carrington . Bollenback has also made guest appearances on television shows such as The Tonight Show , Good Morning America , Joan Rivers , The Today Show and Entertainment Tonight . He has also played with Stanley Turrentine , Gary Bartz , Jeff Tain Watts , Joe Locke , Tim Garland , David Fathead Newman , Steve Wilson , Geoffrey Keezer , Grady Tate , Shunzo Ohno , James Moody , Chris McNulty , Jack McDuff , Charlie Byrd , Paul Bley , Carol Sloane , Carter Jefferson , Herb Ellis , Jimmy Bruno and in East Meets West with Sandip Burman . In the field of jazz he was involved in 102 recording sessions between 1987 and 2015.

Bollenback lives in New York and has taught at American University and Queens College ; his students included u. a. Sandra Hempel and Martin Schulte .
