Steve Davis (* 14. April 1967 in Worcester [Massachusetts] ) is an American jazz - trombone of hard bop .

Life

Steve Davis grew up in Binghamton (New York) and studied jazz at the Hartt School of the University of Hartford with Jackie McLean ; he then recommended him to Art Blakey , who in 1989 accepted him into the Jazz Messengers . After Blakey's death in 1991 he worked at the Hartt Faculty, from 1992 he also played with Jackie McLean until his death in 2006. From 1995 Davis began to record a number of albums under his own name for the Steeplechase label . a. Eric Alexander , David Hazeltine and Harold Mabern performed , as well as Steve Nelson , Brad Mehldau and Avishai Cohen on Davis' album Portrait in Sound (2000).

He has also worked on recordings with Joseph Farnsworth, Avishai Cohen , Chick Coreas Sextet Origin , Freddie Hubbard , McLean, Cecil Payne , Larry Willis ( Blue Fable , 2007) and Michael Weiss . Most recently, with former players from the Jackie McLean band, such as Eric McPherson and Nat Reeves , as well as with pianist Larry Willis, the album Alone Together with interpretations of the Miles Davis classic " Milestones ", " My Foolish Heart " and "Surrey" was created with the Fringe on Top ”and the Billy Strayhorn number“ Upper Manhattan Medical Group ”.

Steve Davis should not be confused with the jazz bassist of the same name, who u. a. worked with McCoy Tyner and John Coltrane .
