Stanley Turrentine
Stanley William Turrentine [ ˈtʌɹəntiːn ] (born April 5, 1934 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , † September 12, 2000 in New York ) was an American jazz saxophonist .
life and work
Stanley Turrentine began playing the tenor saxophone at the age of thirteen and became a professional musician in 1951. He began his career in blues and rhythm and blues bands and was significantly influenced by Illinois Jacquet . In the 1950s he played in bands from Lowell Fulson , Earl Bostic , Tadd Dameron and Max Roach . 1956 to 1958 he was drafted into the US Army . 1959/60 Turrentine worked at Max Roach. At that time he played in the tradition of Ben Webster , but Sonny Rollins also influenced him. His style is characterized by a pronounced melodiousness and very smooth phrasing on the saxophone.
Since he married the organist Shirley Scott in 1960 , he has played with her regularly. In the 1960s he made numerous records in the style of soul jazz for the Blue Note label , including many recordings with the organist Jimmy Smith . In the 1970s, following the taste of the times, he expanded his stylistic spectrum and recorded some critically acclaimed fusion albums for the CTI label that were unusually successful for a jazz musician , including with Eumir Deodato . In the 1980s and 1990s he turned back to more traditional ways of playing.
His brother was the trumpeter Tommy Turrentine .
He died of a stroke in 2000 and was buried in Pittsburgh.
