Al Harewood

Al Harewood (* 3. June 1923 in New York City ; † 13. March 2014 ) was an American jazz drummer of the hard bop .

Harewood was initially active as a tap dancer in the circle of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson . He began his career as a drummer in the early 1950s in the band of Kai Winding and JJ Johnson (Jai & Kai) . He then played with Carmen McRae , Mary Lou Williams and in the sextet of Curtis Fuller and Benny Golson ( Blues-ette ) . In 1958 he worked for Ahmed Abdul-Malik and in 1960 for Booker Ervin (Down in the Dumps) . In the early 1960s he was a busy session musician, especially when it came to making recordings for the Blue Note label, among others. a with Ike Quebec , Bobby Hutcherson (The Kicker) , Grant Green ( Grant Stand , Idle Moments 1963), Stanley Turrentine , Dexter Gordon (Doin 'Alright) and Lou Donaldson . Around 1969 he accompanied the singer Betty Carter , in 1970 he played in Mickey Tucker's Trio, in 1973 with George Benson . In 1977 he worked with Horace Parlan , in 1984 with swing veteran Buddy Tate and in 1985 in Holland with Joe van Enkhuizen . In 1986 he was involved in Lee Konitz 's album Ideal Scene . He also played All-Stars with George Wein's Newport Festival . In the 1990s he was still working with Toshiko Akiyoshi (Remembering Bud) and Howard Alden (Your Story - The Music of Bill Evans) . He was also involved in the performance of Third Stream compositions by Dave Amram .

He taught drumming at Rutgers University .
