Joe Locke
Joseph Paul Locke (* 18th March 1959 in Palo Alto , California , USA ) is an American jazz - vibraphonist and composer .
Career
After initially learning improvisation technique himself, Locke studied classical percussion and composition at the renowned Eastman School of Music under John Beck, Gordon Stout, Ted Moore and David Mancini. Since then, Locke has received widespread recognition from the international press and the music industry both as a soloist and as a band leader and producer.
Act
As a jazz musician, Joe Locke was able to work with musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie , Pepper Adams and Mongo Santamaría before he graduated from high school . Since moving to New York City in 1981 he has worked successfully with Grover Washington Jr. , Kenny Barron , Dianne Reeves , Eddie Daniels , Jerry Gonzalez 'Fort Apache Band, Rod Stewart , The Beastie Boys , Eddie Henderson , Hiram Bullock , Bob, among others Berg , Ron Carter , Jimmy Scott , Geoffrey Keezer , the Mingus Big Band and Randy Brecker . In 2011 he worked on Ryan Truesdells Centennial - Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans .
His album Rev.elation - a tribute to vibraphonist Milt Jackson - was the first album to reach a record-breaking eight-week number 1 position in the US Jazz Week charts in 2005/2006.
According to AAJ , Locke has released more than thirty albums as a leader, and has appeared on around 120 albums as a guest musician. He received three times (2006, 2008 and 2009) the Jazz Journalists Association Award as "Mallet Player of the Year" (vibraphone).
