Terreon Gully

Terreon Gully (* 1982 in East St. Louis , Illinois ) is an American modern jazz musician ( drums , composition ) and a university professor .

Gully attended Lincoln Senior High School , where he played in the school's jazz ensemble under the direction of Ronald Carter. He then studied at the University of Houston , where Marvin Sparks, director of Percussion Studies , was his mentor. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance in 1996 , then moved to Atlanta before moving to New York City in 1998. Since then he has worked in the local jazz scene with Jorge Sylvester ( Following the Line , 1999), Jacky Terrasson (for whom he also composed), in the Christian McBride Band, Marc Cary , Joe Locke / Geoffrey Keezer Group, with Yerba Buena and in Tim Ries Quintet. Recordings were also made with Russell Gunn , Chico Freeman , Lizz Wright , Javon Jackson , Ron Blake , Kurt Elling , John Beasley , Jacques Schwarz-Bart , Kirk Whalum and Junko Ōnishi .

He made a guest appearance with the Stefon Harris Quartet in 2000 on JazzBaltica , with Dianne Reeves in 2012 at the Jazz Week Burghausen . He is currently also playing with Helen Sung & the (re) Conception Project. Under his own name, he released the two albums Vertical Vision (2003) and Live at Tonic (2006). According to Tom Lord , he was involved in 39 recording sessions in the field of jazz between 1998 and 2018, most recently with Michael Feinberg . Gully has been Professor of Drums and Jazz History at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg since 2008 .
