Jorge Sylvester

Jorge Sylvester (* 1954 in Colón , Panama ) is a Panamanian jazz saxophonist.

Sylvester was already leading his own salsa group at the age of fourteen . He had private lessons with the saxophonist Euclides Hall and studied at the Conservatory of Panama with Efrain Castro . In addition, he stepped u. a. with the pianist Victor Boa . Sylvester lived in Europe from 1966 to 1976. Here he was alongside Miguel Chastang Coleader of a quintet or sextet, with whom he recorded two albums.

In the early 1980s he went to the USA and studied at the State University of New York . Here he participated in Karl Berger's Creative Music Program under Ornette Coleman and was a student of Oliver Lake , Dave Holland and Steve Lacy .

He then formed his own quintet with Monte Croft , Gene Jackson , Marvin Sewell and Jeff Carney. As a sideman he worked a. a. with Karl Berger , Ed Blackwell , Ramsey Ameen , Marion Brown , Sonny Fortune , Stefon Harris , Tony Moreno , Marvin Sewell, Claudio Roditi , Rodney Kendrick , David Murray , Sekou Sundiata , Oliver Lake, Kuumba, Frank Lacys Vibe Tribe and Joe Bowies Defunkt Big Band .

Most recently he has worked with singer Nora McCarthy on several projects : The Conceptual Motion Orchestra , a twenty-piece orchestra that performs compositions by Sylvester and McCarthy, in The ACE Collectiv and as a duet A Small Dream in Red .

As a coleader alongside Lucian Ban , he recorded an album in 2005 with the Asymmetry quartet . At the beginning of 2006, Sylvester went on a tour through Europe and Israel with the World Saxophone Quartet . In the same year he made recordings with Waldron Ricks , Danny Grissett , Jaleel Shaw , Nashiet Waits and Vicente Archer . In January 2007 he performed with the Panamenian All Star Jazz Band (with Carlos Garnett , Danilo Pérez , Billy Cobham , Santi Debriano and Renato Thoms ) at the Fourth Annual Panama Jazz Festival .
