James Hurt

James Maurice Hurt Jr (born May 8, 1967 in Memphis , Tennessee ) is an American jazz pianist (also electric piano , keyboards , synthesizers , percussion ) and composer .

Hurt attended Watkins Overton High School of the Creative and Performing Arts, where he was trained in percussion. After performing with Phineas Newborn , he switched to piano as the main instrument. From the mid-1990s worked with Jay Collins , Frank Lacy , Abraham Burton , Russell Gunn , Antonio Hart , Sherman Irby , Abbey Lincoln , Jacques Schwarz-Bart and Jorge Sylvester . In 1999 he recorded his debut album Dark Grooves - Mystical for Blue Note Records , on which u. a. Schwarz-Bart, Robin Eubanks , François Moutin and Ari Hoenig contributed. In the 2000s, he also worked with Graham Haynes , Adam Rudolph and Fabio Morgera. In the field of jazz he was involved in 31 recording sessions between 1995 and 2012. He is currently (2016) playing for Rudresh Mahanthappa in the new edition of Return of 'Saturn Returns' .
