Sherman Irby (born March 24, 1968 in Tuscaloosa , Alabama ) is an American jazz musician ( alto saxophone , also soprano saxophone , flute , clarinet , arrangement ) of the postbop .

Live and act

Irby's childhood was marked by gospel and blues music . During his school days he played with the gospel musician Reverend Dr. James Cleveland . Under the influence of Grover Washington's LP Mister Magic , he chose the alto saxophone as the main instrument. He took lessons from Danny Harper at Miles College in Birmingham, Alabama. He earned a bachelor's degree in music education from Clark Atlanta University in 1991 . In 1991 he played in the Johnny O'Neal Quintet in Atlanta; In 1994 he moved to New York City. Irby played there in 1996 with James Hurt , Eric Revis , Dana Murray and Charlie Persip his debut album Full Circle ( Blue Note ).

In the following years he worked a. a. with Wynton Marsalis and was a member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra from 1995 . He has also worked on recordings by Marcus Roberts , Russell Gunn , Willie Jones III , Roy Hargrove , Claudia Acuña , Eric Revis , Ryan Kisor , Bill Cantrall , Ted Nash , Lisa Kirchner , Don Braden and René Marie . In the field of jazz he was involved in 43 recording sessions between 1996 and 2016.
