Willie Jones III (* 8. June 1968 in Los Angeles ) is a drummer of modern jazz .

Jones, son of pianist and music producer Willie Jones II , reached the semifinals of the Thelonious Monk Jazz Drum Competition in 1992 . In the early 1990s he was one of the founders of Black Note , which released several albums. He also played with Horace Silver , Arturo Sandoval (1995–1998), Roy Hargrove (1998–2005), Hank Jones , Sonny Rollins , Kurt Elling and Eric Reed . Jones was involved in Sandoval's Grammy- winning album Hot House , among others . In 2000 he released his debut album as Leader ( Vol 1 ... Straight Swingin ' ) on his own label . In 2003 he toured with the Herbie Hancock trio , which also included George Mraz . He has continued to work for Ryan Kisor , Ernestine Anderson , Bobby Hutcherson , Wynton Marsalis , Jon Mayer and Cedar Walton . In 2013 The Willie Jones III Sextet Plays the Max Roach Songbook (WJ3) was released, with Eric Reed and Stacy Dillard .
