Charlie Persip

Charles Lawrence Persip (born July 26, 1929 in Morristown , New Jersey - † August 23, 2020 ) was an American jazz musician ( drums ).

life and work

Persip took lessons from Pearl Brackett , played in New Jersey with Billy Ford and later studied at the Juilliard School . In Atlantic City and New York City he played with Tadd Dameron , Clifford Brown and Benny Golson, and in the big bands of Dizzy Gillespie and Harry James . Between 1953 and 1958 he worked for Dizzy Gillespie, with whom he also toured Europe, the Middle East and South America, but also for Hal McKusick . He then played with Zoot Sims , Phil Woods , Harry Edison (1958/59), Harry James, Quincy Jones , Hank Mobley , George Russell , Dinah Washington , Don Ellis and Gil Evans , but since 1959 he also had his first band, the Jazz statesmen . He played his own albums with Freddie Hubbard and Ron Carter .

Increasingly, Persip worked as a drum teacher and head of clinics, but also worked with Cannonball Adderley , Archie Shepp , Sam Rivers , Rahsaan Roland Kirk , Mary Lou Williams and Gene Ammons . Between 1966 and 1973 he was musical director of Billy Eckstine's band and then worked for the New York Jazz Repertory Company. He has also been involved in recordings by musicians such as Curtis Fuller , Big Joe Turner , Jerome Richardson , Joe Albany , Ray Charles , Mal Waldron , Randy Weston , Sonny Rollins , Frank Foster , Mary Osborne , Craig Harris , Larry Ridley and Kenny Burrell .

In the 1980s, Persip led the big band formation Charli Persip and Superband , with which he released two albums for Soul Note . For the following decade, he continued to work with musicians such as Ernie Wilkins , Randy Weston , Reggie Workman , Bubba Brooks , Sherman Irby , Doc Jones and Makanda Ken McIntyre . In the field of jazz, according to Tom Lord , he was involved in 240 recording sessions between 1953 and 2005, most recently with the singer Hisayo Tominaga .

Persip, who teaches at New York New School , published the textbook "How Not To Play Drums" in 1987. His interest as a drummer was particularly focused on transferring the hard bop feeling of small combos to the big band context .
