Bubba Brooks
David Kenneth "Bubba" Brooks (born May 29, 1922 in Fayetteville (North Carolina) ; † April 11, 2002 in New York City ) was an American rhythm & blues and jazz musician ( tenor saxophone ).
Live and act
Bubba Brooks was the older brother of Tina Brooks . He began his career on Pepper McAllister's Medicine Show . During World War II he served in the US Army, where he played in an army band with James Moody . After his discharge from the Army, he moved to New York City in 1944, where he performed at Minton's Playhouse and the Harlem Grill. In 1947 he toured North Carolina in a band with Sonny Payne , then played with George Barkley at the Baby Grand in New York, with Barkley making his first recordings around 1947/48. From 1948 to 1957 he worked with Sonny Thompson , also as an accompanist for the R&B singer Lula Reed . In 1958 he worked with Jimmy McCracklin , in 1961 with Phil Upchurch . In the 1960s he was also active as a session musician in pop music. From 1967 to 1973 he performed with alto saxophonists Charles Williams and Don Pullen in New York, and three albums with Williams were created for Mainstream Records . In 1974 he played briefly with Jimmy McGriff , in 1976 he became a member of Bill Doggett's band , of which he was a member for two decades. In the mid-1990s, Brooks worked with Bross Townsend , Carrie Smith, and the Harlem Blues and Jazz Band . In the mid-90s he released three albums in the mainstream jazz idiom. In 1999 he went on a tour of France with Al Casey . David Bubba Brooks, who stylistically based on Arnett Cobb and Don Byas , participated in 53 recording sessions from 1950 to 2001.
