Jimmy McCracklin (born August 13, 1921 in St. Louis , Missouri , † December 20, 2012 in San Pablo , California ) was an American blues pianist , singer and composer. He was a representative of the West Coast and Jump Blues . During his nearly seven-decade career, McCracklin recorded more than 30 albums, some of which went gold . By his own admission, he wrote nearly a thousand songs.
Live and act
McCracklin's great role model was the blues pianist Walter Davis , whom he had met as a boy. McCracklin was also a boxer at a young age, but opted for music. After his military service during World War II , he moved to the West Coast, where he made his first recording with Miss Mattie Left Me in 1945 . In 1946 he formed his own band Jimmy McCracklin and His Blues Blasters .
Numerous recordings for various labels followed . In 1958 he had his first major hit with The Walk . Other hit numbers included Just Got to Know (1961), Shame, Shame, Shame (1962), Every Night, Every Day (1965) and My Answer (1966). In 1962 his first album Jimmy McCracklin Sings was released . In 1967 Otis Redding and Carla Thomas had a hit with Tramp , written by McCracklin and Lowell Fulson ; In 1987 Salt'N'Pepa put the piece back on the charts .
McCracklin received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 1990 and the Living Legend and Hall of Fame Award at the Bay Area Black Music Awards in 2007. In 2008 he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame .
