The Leipziger Männerchor is a choir in Leipzig that was founded in 1891 by Gustav Wohlgemuth .

history

On March 14, 1891, Gustav Wohlgemuth united the two local choirs he directed, “Liederfels” (founded in 1869, 47 singers) and “Liederhain” (founded in 1883, 37 singers) to form the “Leipziger Men's Choir”. The first important concert took place on November 15th of the same year in the theater of the Leipzig Krystallpalast .

After numerous regional appearances, the choir, which now comprises 127 singers, performed in the Berlin Philharmonic on March 27, 1897 as part of the first major concert tour . Further extensive trips in the next few years led to numerous cities at home and abroad, as highlights, in addition to participation in the German Singers' Association festivals, are the choir appearances in front of King Albert of Saxony (Dresden, March 20, 1898) and Kaiser Wilhelm II ( Kiel, January 24, 1901 and Vienna, March 23, 1914). In Leipzig itself, the choir gave at least three major concerts each year, which were attended by up to 3,000 guests.

During the spring concerts in Leipzig on April 6th and 7th, 1906, the first performance of Friedrich Hegar's “The Heart of Douglas” took place in the presence of the composer . Hegar was then made an honorary member of the Leipzig Men's Choir.

In 1928 their own club orchestra was founded, the first joint appearance took place on April 2nd as a spring concert in the Alberthalle in Leipzig . As part of concerts in Berlin on April 15, 1933, choral works by Gustav Wohlgemuth were sung for record productions, and on June 1, 1935, further recordings were made for the same purpose. Wohlgemuth led the choir, which at times had almost 400 members, until his death in 1937.

The National Socialist tendency in the choir's repertoire increased since the 1930s. During the period of World War II , concerts were held almost exclusively in honor of high-ranking National Socialists and fallen German soldiers.

In the post-war period the choir tried unsuccessfully to build on the successes achieved under Wohlgemuth's leadership. Since the number of members decreased continuously, the Leipzig male choir united with other choirs, but kept its name.
