Walter Knape

Walter Knape (born January 14, 1906 in Bernburg (Saale) ; † November 14, 2000 in Cuxhaven ) was a German conductor, composer, musicologist and university professor and teacher.

biography

Knape graduated from school in Magdeburg until he graduated from high school . He studied musicology at the Magdeburg Music School and from 1927 at the Leipzig Music Conservatory . In 1936 he passed the Kapellmeister examination in Dresden and wrote his state examination on Karl Friedrich Abel's symphonies. From 1939 to 1948 - with war interruptions - he expanded his training as a music teacher in Dessau .

From 1951 to 1957 Knape was director of the Leipzig Singing Academy and the Philharmonic Choir, the Leipzig Men's Choir (1947–1956) and the Great Leipzig Choir Association. He was also a lecturer in music theory at the German University of Music in East Berlin from 1954 to 1956 . As a representative for choirs in the GDR, he initiated east-west exchange concerts and from 1956 was music director of the choir meeting at the Wartburg . In 1957 he was a music teacher at the Musisches Gymnasium in Leipzig- Markkleeberg . As a choir director, he conducted numerous large concerts in the GDR.

In 1957 Knape moved to Cuxhaven and worked as a music teacher at the Lichtenberg-Gymnasium in 1957/58 and at the Amandus-Abendroth-Gymnasium in 1959/60 . At the same time he headed the Collegium musicum at the University of Hamburg , was an academic music teacher at grammar schools in Hanover and became a theater music director. From 1958 to 1972 he was also director of the Cuxhaven City Choir Concerts. In 1972 he retired.

Works

Knape's compositional works include over a hundred titles as piano and organ music, choral and orchestral works, chamber music and songs. He also wrote some specialist books. In 1973, Knape documented the works of Karl Friedrich Abel as an important master of early classical music and Mozart mentor in a fundamental monograph and in the 16-volume complete edition of the compositions in 1976.
