history

The Amandus-Abendroth-Gymnasium Cuxhaven was founded in 1810 by the Hamburg bailiff Amandus Abendroth as the "Higher Civic School of Ritzebüttel". Since 1891 it has been a state secondary school with a Latin department. In 1893 the first year graduated from school with the Abitur. In 1898 it became a "higher state school". In 1929 an extension was built by the architect Fritz Schumacher .

In 1937 it was handed over to Prussia by the previous Hamburg sponsorship and became the “State High School for Boys”.

In 1957 the state high school for boys became the "Gymnasium for boys, old language, modern language and mathematical and natural science high school", in 1972 it became the "Gymnasium Abendrothstraße".

In 1976 a cooperation agreement was entered into with the Lichtenberg-Gymnasium Cuxhaven . In 1979 the first joint Abitur took place after the cooperation agreement. In 1985 the school was named Amandus-Abendroth-Gymnasium .

In 2003, the previous orientation level classes 5 and 6 were dissolved and the classes returned to the grammar school. In 2006, the Amandus-Abendroth-Gymnasium passed the Central Abitur for the first time . In 2018 the school had around 700 students.

Special features in teaching and equipment

  • As one of only a few schools in Lower Saxony, the Amandus-Abendroth-Gymnasium is permitted by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Education to offer Latin as a foreign language from the 5th grade . Since 1890 the city of Cuxhaven offered the opportunity to learn Latin as a first foreign language instead of English.
  • Since 1976 there has been a cooperation with today's Lichtenberg-Gymnasium Cuxhaven. The entire teaching of the Abitur classes is structured across schools.
  • The school library originally served scientific purposes. It has over 30,000 media, the oldest pieces of which date from the 16th century.
