The Lichtenberg-Gymnasium Cuxhaven is a general education high school in Cuxhaven with 538 students (as of August 26, 2016). The school has been named since 1986 after Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742–1799), the first German professor for experimental physics and founder of the German-speaking aphorism .

history

In 1817 the "Töchterschule Ritzebüttel" was founded by the Cuxhaven bailiff Amandus Abendroth . The location was the Nachtigallsche Haus, Am Vorwerk 1, where the school was located until 1898. In 1849 the citizens of Cuxhaven founded their own private "Cuxhaven Daughter School". This remained independent until 1881 when it was integrated together with the Ritzebüttel daughter school into the Cuxhaven community school led by Rector Hahn.

In 1898 the "Higher Töchterschule Ritzebüttel" was privatized again and handed over to the management of Director Kießner. Under this rector, a new school building was built at Friedrich-Carl-Straße 19, which housed the school, now known as the "Augusta-Viktoria-Schule", until 1930. In 1909 the Augusta-Viktoria-Schule was merged with the Higher Daughter School led by Maria Cochius to form the "Higher Girls School Cuxhaven". The school now received municipal grants and was subordinate to a board of trustees under the direction of the mayor. From 1916 it was called "Lyzeum in Cuxhaven" and was an official secondary school. In 1926 the school was taken over by the Hamburg Senate as the "Staatliche Mädchenrealschule Cuxhaven". Three years later, in 1929, the Realschule was elevated to a "Girls Realschule and Realgymnasium for Girls" and thus also offered a high school education. In 1930 the school moved into the current school building at Schulstrasse 18, which was built by Hamburg's chief building director Fritz Schumacher . In the years 1932/34 the first matriculation exams took place here.

In 1934 the school became a "girls' secondary school with a three-year women's school". In 1937 it was handed over to Prussia by the previous Hamburg sponsorship and until 1947 was run as the "State High School for Girls - Housekeeping Form". In 1948 the school received the Acknowledgment Abitur of the scientific form with the "State High School for Girls - Linguistic Form". In 1949 it was expanded to include the mathematical and natural science area. In 1954 the first matriculation examinations for both branches took place, from 1958 onwards they were separated into language and mathematical and scientific classes.

From 1956 the school was officially named a grammar school and was now called "grammar school for girls in Cuxhaven - linguistic and mathematical and scientific form". In 1957 Eleonore Siebrecht became the headmistress. Shortly after the school's 150th anniversary in 1967, the topping-out ceremony for a new science wing was celebrated in 1968, which was put into operation in 1969. Coeducation was introduced in the 1970/71 school year . In 1975 Eleonore Siebrecht handed the school management over to Hans-Joachim Herzig. In 1976 the upper school reform took hold and the first cooperation with the Amandus-Abendroth-Gymnasium was initiated. In 1978 the last unmixed girls' class graduated from high school; In 1979 the first joint Abitur took place after the cooperation agreement with the Amandus-Abendroth-Gymnasium. In the same year, the second extension for the arts and music area was inaugurated.

In 1986 the council decided to rename the previous "Gymnasium Schulstrasse" to "Lichtenberg-Gymnasium Cuxhaven". Lichtenberg was one of the first to recommend the establishment of a seaside resort in what is now Cuxhaven. In 1995, Bernd Kreft took over the school management from Hans-Joachim Herzig. In 1996 the school received an Internet connection as part of the "Schools on the Net" program. In 1997 a student exchange with Krakow was started, in 1998 the first Krakow students attended the Lichtenberg Gymnasium. On September 1, 2008, 463 students attended the school. In 2016 Martin Rehermann took over the school management.
