Nea Plagia ( Greek Νέα Πλάγια ( n. Pl. ); In common parlance also often abbreviated as Plagia ) is a town on the Thermaic Gulf on the west coast of the Halkidiki peninsula in Greece . The distance to the port city of Thessaloniki in the north-west is approx. 46 km as the crow flies, to the small port town of Nea Moudania in the east approx. 7 km as the crow flies, to Nea Triglia in the north it is approx. 5 km as the crow flies and to the prefecture capital Polygyros in the interior of Chalkidiki it is approx. 25 km as the crow flies. Immediately to the east of the village is the village of Flogita, which belongs to the municipality of Moudania .

From its foundation on February 26, 1926 until the municipal reform in 1997, Nea Plagia was an independent rural municipality ( Greek κοινότητα kinotita ). Afterwards it was a municipality of the municipality Triglia ( Greek Δήμος Τριγλίας Dimos Triglias ) in the prefecture of Chalkidiki . In 2010 it merged with the municipality of Triglia in the new municipality of Nea Propondida , in which it has the status of a locality (Τοπική Κοινότητα Topiki Kinotita ). Metochi with 184 inhabitants belongs to the local area of Nea Plagia .

Nea Plagia was founded on August 9, 1924 by Greek refugees from Eastern Thrace (today's European West Turkey) after Greece's defeat in the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1923) and the subsequent “population exchange” agreed in the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne as a settlement. The name Nea Plagia is derived from the place of origin Plagia, as in other localities with a similar settlement history, by the prefix New ( Greek Νέα ). The place of origin of the refugees, Plagia, was 30 km west of today's Istanbul . At the beginning of the 20th century, the original settlement of Plagia had 160 Greek families and one Jewish family. On May 24, 1924, the Greek families left the original Plagia and moved to Nea Plagia. Before the settlement, the area of Nea Plagia was marshland and was converted into arable land by the settlement of Nea Plagia.

Due to its proximity to Thessaloniki and its metropolitan area, Nea Plagia has changed from an agrarian place into a tourist center. Extensive construction work - especially of holiday apartments for people from Thessaloniki and Northern Greece - has allowed the village to grow accordingly and changed its visual impression. This development is also reflected in the number of inhabitants. In 1981 Nea Plagia had 844 inhabitants, in 1991 1,066 inhabitants and 2001 1,433 inhabitants (based on the local area, corresponding to the former rural municipality). Shops and leisure facilities (cafes, restaurants, bars) can be found mainly on the road along the medium-grain sandy beach of Nea Plagia.

Nea Plagia is connected to the national road 67 from Thessaloniki to Nea Moudania by paved roads . This runs in the north of Nea Plagia from north-west to south-east through the area of the village and is currently being expanded to highway 67 . Local public transport as well as long-distance transport is realized exclusively via buses (KTEL). There is no railway connection. The nearest international airport is that of Thessaloniki .
