Polygyros ( Greek Πολύγυρος [ pɔˈliʝirɔs ] ( m. Sg. )) Is a small town with 6121 inhabitants in the northern Greek region of Central Macedonia . Polygyros is the seat of the municipality (Dimos) Polygyros , which was the administrative seat of the former prefecture of Chalkidiki until 2010 . The municipality of Polygyros has consisted of the small town of Polygyros with the settlements Kalives Polygyrou and Patelida in the municipality (dimotiki enotita) Polygyros (11,386 inhabitants) of the municipality (dimos) Polygyros since 2011 .
Polygyros is located roughly in the geographic center of the Chalkidiki peninsula west of the Cholomondas mountain range in a valley basin.
In addition to the facilities of the administrative headquarters, there are central supply facilities such as hospital, court and the military office (corresponds to the German district military replacement office). Polygyros also houses the Archaeological Museum of Chalkidiki, in which finds from archaeological sites all over Halkidiki are exhibited.
Polygyros is connected to Thessaloniki ( national road 16 ) and Gerakini by well-developed roads . A branch route leads over the Cholomondas massif, winding past Taxiarchis to Arnea . These road connections are used in the context of local public transport by means of buses ( KTEL ). As in all of Halkidiki, there are no railway connections. The nearest national and international airport is Thessaloniki Airport .
