The Taxiarchis is a ferry of the Greek NEL Lines , which entered service in 1976 as a RoRo freighter under the name Union Hobart . The ship has been unused in Lavrio since April 2015 .

history

The Union Hobart was created under the hull number 186 in the Framnäs Mekaniske Værksted in Sandefjord and ran on 12 February 1976 by the stack. After the takeover by the Union Steam Ship Company , the ship was put into service in the same year on regular services between Australia and New Zealand . The Union Hobart possessed at that time as RoRo cargo ship has a capacity of only 12 passengers.

In 1984 the ship was named Seaway Hobart and was henceforth sailing between Melbourne and Hobart under the Australian flag . After several years in service on this route, it completed its last crossing on January 17, 1993 and was then sold to Greece.

After their arrival, the Seaway Hobart, now renamed Seaway I , was brought to a shipyard in Perama to be converted into a passenger ferry. The tonnage of the ship increased from 4,120 to 10,749 GRT . In 1994 the ferry, now renamed Agia Methodia , began service between Patras and Brindisi . In April 1995 the Agia Methodia was chartered to Eurolink Ferry Service and used on the route from Sheerness to Vlissingen . In June 1995 it was named Euromantique .

From December 1996 the ship was used by the Dart Line on the route from Dartford to Vlissingen. In June 1997 the Spanish ferry company ISNASA chartered the Euromantique for use between Algeciras and Tangier . Following the bankruptcy of ISNASA in May 1998 the ship was only in Algeciras and then in Piraeus launched .

The new owner was the Maritime Company of Lesvos in January 1999, which gave Euromantique the name Taxiarchis and in June 1999 put it into service for its subsidiary NEL Lines on the route from Leros to Piraeus. After the ship was briefly chartered to the Egyptian shipping company El Salam Maritime in May 2007 , it switched to the route from Piraeus via Chios to Mytilini in November 2007 .

On October 15, 2008, the Taxiarchis was launched in Drapetsona for four months before it was deployed in February 2009 between Lavrion , Agios Efstratios , Lemnos and Kavala . After a further six years of service, the ship had to be arrested in Lavrio in April 2015 due to financial difficulties of the shipping company. NEL Lines filed for bankruptcy and ceased ferry operations. The Taxiarchis is still in Lavrio today.
