Sheerness on Sea is an English city on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent . It belongs to the Swale administrative district and has a population of around 20,000. There has been a railway connection to the mainland via Queenborough since 1860 .

The port facilities on the west side of the town are important, as they are mainly used to handle cars and heavy industrial goods. Up until 1960 there was a Royal Navy Dockyard (shipyard, established in 1669) at the Thames estuary, the disused boat magazine No. 78 of which still exists.

In 1944 the American SS Richard Montgomery, laden with ammunition, ran aground and sank on the site . Because of the danger of explosion, the wreck was never recovered. There is still a risk of explosion there (2004, New Scientist).

The Olau Line operated a ferry service with two ships between Sheerness and Vlissingen in the Netherlands until 1994 .

On April 7, 2005, the Piano Man , who was initially unidentifiable, was found here on the beach .
