The building can be seen in the middle behind the boats

The former boat magazine No. 78 in the Naval Dockyard is now a vacant building in Sheerness . The boat magazine was designed in 1858 and built in 1859-61 (according to other sources 1856-60) by the architects GT Greene and William Scamp for the Admiralty Works Department. The building is one of the most remarkable constructions of its time, as it uses methods in both design and construction that did not become common until years later. The building consists of a four-story iron frame, flat ribbon windows and corrugated iron . It is 63 m long and 40 m wide. The iron structure was made by Henry Grissell's Regents Canal Iron Works . The extensive use of iron and glass was novel. The building remains a singular appearance; similar constructions were only used again in Chicago at the end of the 19th century .

The building has been a listed building ( Grade I ) since 1962 .
