The Ethniki Odos 16 / Εθνική Οδός 16 ( Greek for 'national road 16') is a trunk road in northern Greece that connects Thessaloniki with large parts of the peninsula and the prefecture of Chalkidiki . It was established in 1963 as a connection between Thessaloniki and Ierissos via Arnea.
course
It leads from Thessaloniki (triangle Efkarpia) from the highway 2 (A2) as "inner ring Thessaloniki" (Esoteriki Periferiaki Odos Thessalonikis) in a southeast direction around Thessaloniki to the airport of Thessaloniki . From there it bends southeast into the interior of the Chalkidiki and runs in a west-east direction across the "palm" (central country) of the Chalkidiki to Stratoni on the Strymonian Gulf .
From the Thessaloniki airport in Mikra, the national road 16 leads on a two-lane road south of the mountain Chortiatis through the Anthemous valley via Galatista to Polygyros , the capital of the prefecture of Chalkidiki . From Polygyros the national road 16 goes further east: it passes the villages Paleochora, Arnea , Paliochori, Stagira on the northern edge of the Cholomondas and leads through a green mountain valley. After Stagira, the national road 16 descends the densely forested eastern slope of the Central Chalkidiki in abundant serpentines until it reaches the sea at the village of Stratoni or crosses the road from Stavros to Ouranoupoli / Ierissos .
Course variants
The route from Thessaloniki to Stratoni can be viewed as secured on the basis of various maps (freytag & berndt: Chalkidiki-Thessaloniki- Thassos map, digitized map on greektourism.com ). However, the course from Stratoni is unclear.
Variant of Ouranoupolis
According to the maps of greektourism.com , the national road 16 leads from Stratoni further south along the sea. It runs along the bay of Ierissos to the town of the same name, Ierissos . From Ierissos, the national road 16 crosses the isthmus in a south-westerly direction (at the same time the foot of the Athos peninsula and location of the Xerxes Canal ) to Ouranoupoli . There the national road 16 ends at the border to the autonomous region of Mount Athos (monastic republic).
Variant of Stratoni
National road 16 ends in Stratoni . This would correspond to the course of the road and the state of development.
State of development
From Thessaloniki (triangle Efkarpia) to the airport / Thermi junction, national road 16 has been developed as the "inner ring of Thessaloniki" and the motorway connection to Chalkidiki ( Nea Moudania ) as a motorway: 2 directional lanes, each with 3 lanes and a hard shoulder.
From the airport / Thermi junction, there is a country road with two-way traffic and one lane in each direction. In some, especially mountainous sections of the road, the national road also has three lanes (one of which is a creeping lane).
The road from Stratoni to Ierissos has one lane in each direction. From Ierissos to Ouranoupolis, the lane width is narrower than on the other sections.
