Strymonic Gulf ( Greek Στρυμονικός κόλπος ) describes a gulf or a sea area in the northern part of the Aegean Sea . The gulf was named after the river Strymonas that flows into it . Alternatively, it is also called the Gulf of Orfanos ( Κόλπος Ορφανού ).

The Strymonian Gulf borders the east coast of the Chalkidiki peninsula in the west . In the north, the coast of Eastern Macedonia around the mouth of the Strymonas River forms the boundary to the protrusion of the Pangeo and Symvologe Mountains into the Aegean Sea. To the south and thus to the open sea of the Aegean Sea, the boundary forms a line between the Stratoniki peninsula with Cape Elefthera on Chalkidiki and the promontory of the Pangeo Mountains. The west and south-west boundaries of the Strymonian Gulf can also be determined further south at Cape Akrita on the Athos peninsula. To the east, the Strymonian Gulf borders on the coast of the Gulf of Kavala, which lies north of the island of Thasos. The Gulf of Ierissos (or Gulf of Akanthos ) is separated by the Stratoniki peninsula .

The Strymonian Gulf is a sub-area of the Northeast Aegean or the Thracian Sea. As a part of the North Aegean shelf, its depth does not exceed 200 m. In its eastern part (according to another opinion already the Gulf of Kavala) the only economically used oil deposits in Greece can be found. Most of the fresh water is brought in through the Strymonas River. However, the lakes in mygodonischen basin, the drain Lake Volvi and Koronia Lake , over the small river Richios in Strymonic golf. The Strymonian Gulf does not receive any significant amounts of fresh water from the Chalkidiki.

On the land side, the regional districts of Chalkidiki on the peninsula of the same name, Serres , Thessaloniki and Kavala border the Strymonian Gulf. Cities and towns on its coast are in Chalkidiki Olymbiada, in the regional unit of Thessaloniki Stavros , Vrasna and Asprovalta, in the regional unit of Serres Nea Kerdylia and Nea Amphipoli and in the regional unit of Kavala Kariani and Orfani.

In the Strymonic Gulf there is only one small, uninhabited island: Kafkanas or Kapros. It is located a few kilometers from the east coast of Chalkidiki at the level of the village of Olymbiada or at the level of ancient Stageira .
