The Koronia Lake ( Greek Λίμνη Κορώνεια spoken Límni Koronia , alternative designations Greek Λίμνη Λαγκαδά spoken Límni Langada or Greek Λίμνη Αγίου Βασιλείου spoken Límni Ajíou Vassiliou ; . Mazedon / . Bulgar name Лагадинско Езеро spoken Lagadinsko Ezero ) is a lake in the Mygdonia region in the Thessaloniki regional unit of the Central Macedonia administrative region in northern Greece .
Lake Koronia is located in a depression between the Chalkidiki peninsula and the Chortiatis massif in the south and the Vertsikos mountain ranges in the north. In the east, separated by an isthmus, is Lake Volvi , in the west the lake is separated from the city of Thessaloniki by the foothills of the Chortiatis massif . About 1,000,000 years ago, Lake Koronia and Lake Volvi formed a large lake in the Mygdonia Depression, which drained through the valley of Rendina to the east into the Strymonic Gulf of the Aegean Sea . Later the two lakes in the Mygdonian Depression were separated and the runoff into the Aegean Sea dried up.
The surface of the lake is 75 m above sea level. The surface of the lake comprises 48 square kilometers, the catchment area of the lake ( catchment area ) amounted to 350 square kilometers. The mean depth of Lake Koronia is 3.5 m, the maximum depth is 9.5 m. The water volume is 175 × 10 6 cubic meters. Lake Koronia is the one with the highest alkalinity in Greece.
National road 2 runs south of the lake and motorway 2 ( Egnatia Odos ) north of the lake . Counting counterclockwise from the northwest on its shore lie the small town of Langadas , Kavalari, Agios Vassilios , after which the lake is also named, Vasiloudi, Yerakarou, Langkadikia , Scholari, Evangelismos. The Emmaus convent is also located near Agios Vassilios.
The Koronia lake silts up and is therefore getting smaller and smaller. The isthmus between Lake Koronia and Lake Volvi is growing accordingly. In the 1950s there was still extensive fishing in Lake Koronia. In the 1970s, Lake Koronia had an average depth of 5 m. In the first 2000s, the lake's depth dropped to 50 cm to 1 m on average. In 2002 there was already a threat of complete drying out, and in early July 2008 the lake was completely dry.
The lake had already dried out completely several times due to excessive water abstraction for irrigation , and fish died again and again .
Lake Koronia is part of the Natura 2000 network, the European network of nature reserves.
