Central Macedonia , also Central Macedonia , ( Greek Κεντρική Μακεδονία , Kendrikí Makedonía ) is one of the 13 regions of Greece and forms the central part of Greek Macedonia . The capital of the region is Thessaloniki .

geography

Central Macedonia is the largest of the 13 administrative regions of Greece with an area of ​​19,147 square kilometers (including the autonomous monastic republic of Athos ) . It borders the states of Bulgaria and North Macedonia to the north, the West Macedonia region to the west, the Thessaly region to the southwest and the East Macedonia and Thrace region to the east . The southern border of Central Macedonia forms the coast of the Aegean Sea .

Antiquity

With the exception of the Chalkidiki peninsula , Central Macedonia is largely congruent with the ancient geographic region of Lower Macedonia .

The first regional elections in Greece in 2010 resulted in a clear Nea Dimokratia majority for the regional council ; Panagiotis Psomiadis was able to win the post of governor for his list

Regional districts and municipalities

The Central Macedonia region is divided into seven regional districts, which correspond to the areas of the prefectures that existed until 2010. In proportion to their population, they send a certain number of MPs to the 71-member regional council.

economy

In comparison with the GDP of the EU, expressed in purchasing power standards, Central Macedonia achieved an index of 78.7 (EU-25: 100) ( 2003 ). In 2017 the unemployment rate was 22.9%.
