The North Aegean ( Greek Βόρειο Αιγαίο Vorio Egeo [ ˈvɔrjɔ ɛˈʝɛɔ ]) is one of the 13 regions of Greece that were established in 1987 and have been self-governing since 2011. It encompasses numerous islands that extend over around 300 kilometers from the Turkish west coast in a north-south direction and, from a geographical point of view, belong to the North Aegean and East Aegean Islands as well as the Southern Sporades . Their territory has been part of Greece since the implementation of the London Treaty in 1913. Its area (11th place among the regions) is slightly larger than the Attica , with almost 200,000 inhabitants it is the least populous Greek region. With Lesbos, Chios, Samos and Limnos, four of the ten largest Greek islands belong to it. The capital is Mytilene on Lesbos.
