The Inousses ( Greek Οινούσσες ( f. Pl. )) Are an archipelago of the East Aegean Islands in the Aegean Sea . The archipelago also forms the municipality of Inousses ( Dimos Inousson Δήμος Οινουσσών) and, together with the municipality of Chios (Δήμος Χίου), the regional district of Chios (Περιφερειακή Ενότητα Χίου) in the North Aegean region . The largest island and the only place in the municipality on its south coast have the same name. The Inousses are located in the sound only 17 kilometers wide between the Greek island of Chios and the Turkish mainland.

The northwest coast of the island of Chios is two kilometers west, the coast of Turkey nine kilometers east. Only the main island Inousses (also Inoussa or Egnousa ) is inhabited, the much smaller and uninhabited other islands of the archipelago are located southeast of the main island. The main island is about 7.5 kilometers long, up to 2.8 kilometers wide and has an area of 14.382 km². The whole archipelago is 17.427 km² in size. The green and quite densely forested island is hilly and reaches a height of 182 meters. In the summer of 2012, a large area in the west of the main island up to the Evangelismou monastery was burned.

The village of Inousses

About 750 to 800 inhabitants live permanently on Inousses, in the summer months the population increases significantly. The island is the residence of several important Greek shipping families. It is considered one of the richest communities in Greece.

Fishing as well as agriculture (including wine growing) have lost more and more of their importance. Tourism is mainly limited to day-trippers from the neighboring island of Chios . Package tourism is still unknown on Inousses; however, there are some accommodation options in private quarters and pensions.

The island has some beautiful and uncrowded beaches. In the main town, a nautical museum reminds of the heyday of shipping. Inousses was not of particular importance in antiquity, so that archaeological sites and sites from this time are not available.

The nearest airport with connections to Athens is on Chios .

A ferry runs regularly between Inousses and the port of Chios , which is 17 kilometers southwest .
