East Macedonia and Thrace , also East Macedonia and Thrace , ( Greek Ανατολική Μακεδονία και Θράκη , Anatoliki Makedonia ke Thraki ) is the northernmost of the thirteen administrative regions of Greece and consists of the eastern part of Greek Macedonia and the Greek part . The capital of the region is Komotini .

East Macedonia and Thrace is located in northern Greece and borders in the Rhodope Mountains north of Bulgaria , to the east of the river separates Evros , the Greek west of Eastern Thrace, the European part of Turkey belongs. In 2001 there were 623,248 inhabitants in East Macedonia and Thrace, the majority of them Greeks . Western Thrace is the traditional settlement area of ​​the Muslim minority of Greece, which is estimated to have at least 100,000 people. The majority of them are Turks , and around 39,000 Bulgarian- speaking Pomaks and several thousand Muslim Roma live in the region. The historical Thracian areas in particular are populated by Muslims, as Thrace was excluded from the population exchange as a result of the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923 . Like many areas of northern Greece, the area of ​​the region was otherwise affected by this same population exchange, so that many of the Greeks residing here come from families who were expelled from the Ottoman Empire and settled here in the 1920s .

The region of East Macedonia and Thrace is divided into six regional districts and 22 municipalities. In proportion to their population, the regional districts send a certain number of members to the 51-member regional council.
