The municipality of Soufli is located in the far east of the East Macedonia and Thrace region . With 1325.721 km² it is the largest municipality in the region. In the north the municipality borders on the Bulgarian Oblast Chaskowo and the municipality Didymoticho , in the east the Evros forms the border with the Turkish province Edirne . The municipality of Alexandroupoli borders in the south and the municipalities of Arriana and Maronia-Sapes in the west .
history
The area on the Evros River is considered to be the oldest European site for silk production. The city flourished under Ottoman rule in the 19th century when, with the industrial revolution and the connection to the Dedeağaç - Edirne railway line in 1872, it became a flourishing center of silkworm farming and silk production . The production grew after the turn of the 20th century to up to 40 tons of silk thread annually. Almost the entire population lived from silk production, mulberry forests shaped the banks of the Evros. The silk museum is now dedicated to the documentation of this branch of industry.
The Balkan Wars led to the region's economic decline. This was reinforced by the fact that Soufli, when Thrace was divided in 1923, came to Greece with Western Thrace and not only lost its hinterland east of the Evros River - with the mulberry tree plantings required for silkworms - but also the navigable connection to the Aegean via the Evros, which had now become a border river. In addition, there was the advance of synthetic industrial synthetic fibers. Today around 50 people are still employed in silk production.
In 1908 the city had about 12,000 to 13,000 inhabitants. In addition to silk production, viticulture was the second important branch of the economy.
