Maronia-Sapes ( Greek Μαρώνεια-Σάπες ) has been a municipality in the northeastern Greek region of East Macedonia and Thrace since 2011 . The parish is divided into two parish districts. The administrative seat is the small town of Sapes .

location

The municipality of Maronia-Sapes extends in the east of the East Macedonia and Thrace region north of the Thracian Sea over 641,751 km². Adjacent municipalities are Arriana , Soufli in the north and northeast , Alexandroupoli in the east and Komotini in the west . A narrow strip in the north separates an exclave of the municipality of Arriana from its municipality.

Administrative division

The municipality was formed after the administrative reform in 2010 from the merger of the former municipalities Maronia and Sapes . The administrative seat of the municipality is the city of Sapes . The former municipalities have since formed municipal districts. The community is further subdivided into 3 city districts and 14 local communities.

The two most important transport routes in northern Greece, which connect to the Bulgarian and Turkish transport network, run through the municipality in a west-east direction with the motorway 2 and the Thessaloniki – Ormenio railway line.
