List of regions of Greece

This list brings together the regions of Greece that have existed since 1987 , to which political self-government was granted with the Kallikratis program of 2010 from January 1, 2011 and which have since formed the middle, regional level of the political division of Greece . Until the end of 2010, they were administered by the Greek state directly through appointed general secretaries and referred to as "administrative regions" (Ez. Greek διοικητική περιφέρεια Diikitikí periféria ). Since 2011 they only have the name Περιφέρεια Periféria ("region", also known as Perifereia ).

The regions are further subdivided into regional districts ( περιφερειακή ενότητα Periferiaki enotita , literally “regional unit”), which largely emerged from the former prefectures and play a role in the allocation of electoral districts for the regional councils, the composition of which was determined in the regional elections in 2010 . The periféries also form the NUTS 2 level of EU statistics.

The list also lists the area and population as well as the number of municipalities.
