It was formed on the occasion of the administrative reform in 2010 from six island communities of the former Dodecanese prefecture and corresponds exactly to the area of the former province of Kalymnos, which existed until 1997. In proportion to its 29,452 inhabitants, the area sends five members to the regional council, but has no further political significance as a regional authority. It is divided into the six islands and municipalities of Agathonisi , Astypalea , Kalymnos , Leros , Lipsi and Patmos .
