Boeotia ( Greek Βοιωτία Viotía ) is one of the five regional districts of the Greek region of Central Greece . It roughly coincides with the historical landscape of Boeotia .

geography

Boeotia borders on Phocis in the west, the Corinthian Gulf in the south, the Kithairon in the east and the Opuntian Lokris in the north . The Euboean Sound formed the natural eastern border for a long time. The area is hilly in the north and mountainous in the south, with flat lowlands in between. The most important places in antiquity were Thebes and Haliartos , as well as Orchomenos , Thespiai (Thespiae) and Plataiai (Platää). Today's main places are Thebes (Thiva) and Livadia . Boeotia remained an inland agricultural land, although its coastlines contained natural harbors. Akraiphia , Aulis , Eutresis , Gla , Leuktra , Siphai , Tanagra and Thisbe are also of historical and archaeological importance .

structure

The Boeotia Regional Unit comprises the municipalities of Aliartos-Thespies , Distomo-Arachova-Andikyra , Livadia , Orchomenos , Tanagra and Thiva .

history

For history in antiquity and the Middle Ages see Boeotia .

After Greece gained independence, Boeotia was part of the prefecture of Attica-Boeotia from 1833 to 1943, from 1899 to 1909 and finally from 1943 an independent prefecture , from 1986 in the administrative region of Central Greece. In 1974 some coastal communities were spun off into the Euboea prefecture .

As a result of the administrative reform of 2010 , the competences of the prefecture were transferred to the region of Central Greece and the municipalities, which were greatly reduced by the merger. As a regional district, Boeotia sends eleven members to the Central Greek Regional Council, but beyond that it no longer has any political significance.
