The regional district of Rethymno ( Greek Periferiaki Enotita Rethymnou ) is one of the four regional districts of the Greek region of Crete with the capital Rethymno . It was established as a prefecture after Crete was annexed to Greece in 1915 and initially also included the province of Sfakia , which was attached to the prefecture of Chania in 1925. With the 2010 Greek administrative reformthe prefecture was abolished, the competences were divided between the region and the numerically greatly reduced municipalities. Since then, the area has continued to exist as a regional district, which sends seven members to the Cretan regional council, but has no political significance beyond that. It includes the communities of Agios Vasilios , Amari , Anogia , Mylopotamos and Rethymno.
The area of Rethymno lies between Chania in the west and Heraklion in the east in the western part of the Crete region .
Topographically , the regional district comprises the area east of the Lefka Ori ( White Mountains ) to the transition from the Psiloritis massif (also called the Ida Mountains ) to the Messara plain . The 2456 meter high Psiloritis , the highest peak in Crete, is thus in the area of the prefecture.
Apart from the uninhabited Paximadia Islands in the Messara Bay , no other islands belong to Rethymno.
