The regional district Florina ( Greek Periferiaki Enotita Florinas ) is the northernmost of the four regional districts of the Greek region West Macedonia with the eponymous capital Florina . Florina was founded as a prefecture in 1915 after the Second Balkan War and lost its self-government due to the administrative reform in 2010 . Since then, the area has sent nine MPs to the West Macedonian Regional Council, but has no further political significance. Florina includes the parishes of Amyndeo , Florina, and Prespes .

geography

The area forms the northwesternmost region of Greece. At its north-westerly point, it has the triangle of Albania , Greece and North Macedonia , which is located on the land bridge between the large and small Prespa lakes . The northwest of the area is shaped by the landscape of the Prespa lakes. The southern small Prespa lake belongs mostly to Greece and a smaller part to Albania, the large Prespa lake to the north of it belongs to a small part to Greece and Albania and a larger part to Macedonia. Both lakes are only separated by a narrow land bridge. The Prespa lakes, especially the small ones, are known for the diversity of their flora and fauna. The entire region is therefore under nature protection, the Greek part of the area is a national park (Ethnikos Drimos Prespon).

The lakes are separated from the rest of the area by mountain ranges. To the east of the Prespa lakes, it separates the Varnous massif from the Florina plain in the central and northern part of the area. South of the Varnous and southeast of the Prespa lakes rises the second largest mountain of Florina, the Verno with a height of 2128 m. Between the mountain ranges, the pass road leads via Pisoderi from Florina to the Prespa lakes or to Kastoria or Krystallopigi and on to Albania. The Verno massif delimits the area in its central part to the southwest towards Kastoria . The latter extends west of the Verno into the area of the Florina prefecture. To the south of the Prespa lakes, the Triklario separates the plain around the Prespa lakes from the valley of Krystallopigi. The valley of an Aliakmonas tributary leads from the top of the pass near Pisoderi to Kotas (where the Krystallopigi valley branches off) and then on to Kastoria.

The central part is a plain, especially in the northern part towards Macedonia. The city of Florina is located on the western edge of the area, just before the eastern foothills of the Varnous massif. The Sakoulevas River flows down from the Varnous massif through the city of Florina. The plain extends to the north to the border with Macedonia , to the east to the village of Meliti and the western foothills of the Voras (Kaimaktsalan), the highest mountain in the prefecture at 2520 m (also one of the five highest mountains in Greece with a well-known ski area). The south-eastern limit of the Florina plain is near the village of Vevi . A series of smaller mountains and hills between the foothills of the Voras and the Verno leave the pass of Klidi free, which connects the plain of Florina with the plain of Eordaia.

To the south is the northern part of the Eordaia plain . The second largest town, Amyndeo , is in this area. In the south-east of the regional district on the northern edge of the Eordaia plain is Lake Petres , and only slightly further east is Lake Vegoritida , one of the largest lakes in Greece. Two more (smaller) Lakes, which are found on the western boundary of the northern part of the plain of Eordaia Zazari Lake and Cheimaditis Lake . To the south of this area, the Eordaia plain continues into the area of the former Kozani prefecture . In the southwest of the area on the western edge of the plain of Eordaia, the Klisoura Pass allows a passage between the south and southeast flanks of the Verno and the north or northeast flank of the Askio from Amyndeo to Kastoria.
