Kilkis ( Greek Κιλκίς Kilkís ) is one of the seven regional districts (Ez. Periferiaki Enotita ) of the Greek region of Central Macedonia and includes the municipalities of Kilkis and Peonia . The area was formed in 1934 by splitting off from the prefecture of Thessaloniki as a prefecture . With the administrative reform of 2010 , the competences of the prefecture were transferred to the region of Central Macedonia and the municipalities reduced by amalgamation from twelve to two; Since then, the regional district has sent three members to the Central Macedonian Regional Council, but has no further political significance. The only larger city in the area with 24,274 inhabitants is the former prefecture capital Kilkis.

Economy and Morphology

The region's economy depends almost entirely on the agricultural sector. The main products are wheat , tobacco and cotton . However, animal husbandry is also becoming more and more important for the region. Due to the nature of the soil, the prefecture has very little forest area compared to other areas of the Macedonia region. Industry only plays a very subordinate role in the region.

traffic

The National Highway 1 and Highway 1 ( E75 ) and the National Road 65 lead by the Regional District. In addition, there is a connection to the Macedonian Dojran .
