Course of the road

The Ethniki Odos 1 ( Greek Εθνική Οδός 1 , EO 1 'National Road 1') is the old main road with one lane in each direction that connects Athens with Thessaloniki and Evzoni , the border town between Greece and North Macedonia . Most of the route has been replaced by the A1 .
Original course
According to the 1963 government gazette, the original route of EO 1 from Athens to Evzoni on the border of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia passed through the following locations:
- Dekeleia
- Sfendali ( Malakasa , Oropos )
- Martino (Phthiotis) ( Lokri )
- Atalandi
- Kamena Vourla Molos-Agios Konstantinos
- Thermopylae
- Lamia
- Stylida
- Almyros
- Velestino for Volos
- Larisa
- Tempe
- Katerini
- Alexandreia
- Chalkidona
- Gefyra
- Polykastro .
Today's course
Today the A1 has taken up most of the original route, even if the old single-lane road still runs alongside the route of the A1 for the most part. However, there is a bottleneck west of Lake Yliki where non-motorway traffic is diverted via Thiva and Aliartos on EO 3 . The border crossing in Evzoni is only developed as a motorway crossing.
