The Yliki ( Modern Greek Υλίκη , f sg .;. Ancient Greek Ὑλικὴ (λίμνη) Hylike (limne) ; Latin Hylica , Albanian Likéri ) is a natural lake in Viotia , north of Thiva (ancient Thebes ) and only slightly to the east of Kopais -Sees , separated from this by the foothills of the Ptoon with the mountain Messapio ( Μεσσάπιο όρος or Κτυπάς Ktypas ). It has an extension of 19.1 km², its banks are very steep and since 1958 it has been part of the Athens water supply. The lake is fed, among other things, from the waters of the Kopaïs. When it was drained at the end of the 19th century, the water level of the Yliki rose by 35 meters.
history
In ancient times the lake was called Hylike, after the city of Hyle ( Ύλη ) that stood on its banks. The waters of the lake flowed into the neighboring lakes Trefia ( Τρεφία ) and Oungria ( Ουγγρία ), today's Paralimni lake ( Παραλίμνη ). There was a large temple of the god Apollo near the lake , who was nicknamed Ptoos ( Πτώος ) after the neighboring mountain.
Connection to the water supply of Athens
In 1959, the water from the lake began to be diverted into Marathon Lake , so that the water supply of Athens, which had become inadequate due to the explosive growth, could be ensured. After the basic supply was secured, the excess water has been directed into the Mornos reservoir (Μόρνος) since 1981 . The water is introduced from the Yliki into the Marathon reservoir via pipe systems that are connected to the reservoir by a pumping station near Mouriki ( Μουρίκι-Βίλιζα ).
