life and work

Felix Bölte, the son of the lawyer and notary August Wilhelm Bölte, attended the Gymnasium Fridericianum in Schwerin and from 1881 studied classical philology at the universities of Berlin and Bonn . After completing his doctorate with Hermann Usener (July 23, 1886), he passed the teaching examination in Latin, Greek, German and history on June 18, 1887.

On October 1, 1887, Bölte began his probationary year at the Städtisches Gymnasium zu Frankfurt am Main , where he then worked as a scientific assistant teacher. From 1892 to 1893 he stayed in London to learn English. After his return he switched to the Goethe Gymnasium , which had emerged from the municipal gymnasium as a reform institute according to the “Frankfurt curriculum”. Under the rector Karl Reinhardt , Bölte taught Latin, Greek, German, history and English, and from 1894 also gymnastics. In 1895 he was employed as a senior teacher.

Bölte remained scientifically active in addition to his work in the school service. He dealt mainly with the Roman prose writers. In addition, Greek regional studies also came into his focus. In 1903/1904, half a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute enabled him to go on a study trip to Greece for high school teachers. During this trip he carried out an excavation in Nisaia (Megaris) together with the scholarship holder Georg Weicker . Bölte undertook a second study trip in 1909. The German Archaeological Institute appointed him a corresponding member in 1913 and a full member in 1914. From 1916 to 1920 Bölte was rector of the Goethe-Gymnasium. In 1920 he gave up the rectorate to work again as a senior teacher. In 1921 he was appointed honorary professor for Classical Philology and Classical Studies at the University of Frankfurt . From 1921 to 1927 he gave lectures on Greek literature, regional studies and topography. In 1924 he took early retirement as a teacher, and in 1928 he took regular retirement.

Bölte published the results of his research work mainly in shorter articles. His most extensive publication, a word on Caesar's Bellum Gallicum , was created in connection with his educational work. In addition, from around 1910 onwards, Bölte wrote numerous articles for the Realencyclopadie of classical antiquity .

Felix Bölte's estate went to the Department of Ancient History at the University of Frankfurt. In addition to Bölte's private library, it contains diary entries and photographs of his trips to Greece. The estate is currently being processed by Jörn Kobes.
