Gabow is a village that belongs to the municipality of Bad Freienwalde (Oder) in the Märkisch-Oderland district.
Geographical location
The village is located four kilometers north-east of Bad Freienwalde (Oder) on the south-eastern slope of the Neuenhagen Island . The B 158 passes the village about a kilometer northwest.
history
The area around Gabow has been populated since the Neolithic Age. A stone hammer from this time was found here. In 1933, bronze lance tips and arm rings were found plowing in a field. These come from the Young Bronze Age. Late Slavic sherds were discovered in 1996. The name Gabow also suggests a Slavic foundation in the 12th or 13th century. In the land book of Neumark the place is recorded as Grabow. At that time, 21 families lived here.
After the Thirty Years' War , only three of the 21 kossatten lived ; in 1718 there were again 22 fishing families in the village. In 1810 a fire destroyed more than half of the farms.
In 1945 Gabow became part of the municipality of Schiffmühle . With the community reform in 2003 Gabow became a district of Bad Freienwalde. In 2005 there were 644 inhabitants in Schiffmühle, Neutornow and Gabow.
Townscape
Originally the place was a round village , which can still be seen on the village green. After the fire in 1810, the place was expanded to the north and east. The houses that were spared in the fire have undergone major changes, but the facades are still well preserved. At the beginning of the 19th century a school was built in the middle of the village. There is still a field oven near the former school, although it has undergone major changes in the time it was in existence.
The house Gabow 2 is one of the oldest houses in the village. It is a half-timbered house from the second quarter of the 19th century.
