Hohenwutzen was mentioned for the first time in 1337 together with other villages on the island of Neuenhagen in the Neumark Landbuch . The village was founded by Slavic settlers. The old village complex still has the shape of the Wendish round shape . The farmsteads are arranged in a horseshoe shape around the field. The nets were hung there and the cattle were kept at night. Until the middle of the 18th century, the waters of the Oder flowed sluggishly and shallowly through swamps and ravines. Floods were particularly frequent in spring. Under King Friedrich II , the new Oder Canal was built in 1747–1753 - this created the Neuenhagen Island - and the Oderbruch drained. The newly gained, fertile land was distributed among the old farmers, fishermen and new settlers. In addition to fishing, agriculture and shipping developed. The Hohenwutzener Sand settlement was established in 1789, and more and more boatmen settled there. Hohenwutzen Sand soon outstripped the old village in size. Conradsbrück, another district, was built in a hollow on the road to Bad Freienwalde. On July 1, 1945, the district of Neuglietzen was included.

During the GDR era , a ten-class polytechnic high school with a gym was built in the village .

On October 26, 2003 Hohenwutzen was incorporated into Bad Freienwalde (Oder).
