Neutornow is a street village and a residential area in the Schiffmühle district of the city of Bad Freienwalde (Oder) in Brandenburg. The place is on the island of Neuenhagen on a tributary of the Old Oder.

Location and history

Neutornow is located three kilometers northeast of Bad Freienwalde on the island of Neuenhagen. The neighboring towns are Schiffmühle and Gabow .

During excavations near Neutornow, a hammer ax made from green diabase was found. The find indicates that people settled here as early as the Bronze or Early Iron Age . At the same time, a cremation cemetery with six urns was found in the Neutornow area.

Through the amelioration of the Oderbruch from 1755 to 1760 Neutornow was also founded and laid out as a colonist place. In Bad Freienwalde there was a settlement Tornow, Neutornow was named after this settlement, Tornow was renamed Alttornow. 42 colonists settled here, they came from the Palatinate , but also from Hessen-Darmstadt . Each family received 11.5 acres of land, the Schulze and Müller 90 and 45 acres, respectively . In 1763, 207 people lived in Neutornow. The church was consecrated in 1770. At this time, emigration also began, so that in 1776 only 176 inhabitants lived here.

There was a severe flooding in 1838, the construction of a pumping station did not help until 1895, after which there were no major floods. Village fires destroyed parts of Neutornow in 1803 and 1805.

In 1945 Neutornow became part of the municipality of Schiffmühle. In 2003 Schiffmühle was incorporated into Bad Freienwalde, so Neutornow is also part of Bad Freienwalde.

Architectural monuments

The layout of the colonists' village is still preserved today. There are three architectural monuments:

  • Village church: The church was built in 1769/1770. The tower was added in 1877. It is a hall building with a tent roof . In 1929 the roof structure burned and destroyed the church. During the reconstruction, the church was raised by 1.50 meters. The furnishings come almost entirely from the time of the reconstruction. The tower clock was acquired in 1877, the baptismal font is from around 1880.
  • Grave site: The grave site of Louis Henri Fontane , the father of Theodor Fontane, is located in the churchyard south of the church .
  • Pumping station: The pumping station is located south of the bank of the Alte Oder on Dammweg. The pumping station was inaugurated in 1896. At that time, the pumping station included three steam engines and two centrifugal pumps. During the Second World War and a flood in 1947, the pumping station was destroyed, but it was rebuilt by October 15, 1949. The pumping station is still in operation.
