Louis Henri Fontane (born March 24, 1796 in Berlin , † October 5, 1867 in Schiffmühle ) was a German pharmacist and father of the writer Heinrich Theodor Fontane .

Life

His father was the painter and music teacher Pierre Barthélemy Fontane, later cabinet secretary to Queen Luise of Prussia . After the royal court fled to Königsberg because of the defeat at the Battle of Jena and Auerstedt in 1806, Pierre Barthélemy Fontane became castellan of Schönhausen Palace .

Louis Henri Fontane attended the Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster in Berlin for three years, probably until autumn 1809 ; then he joined the elephant pharmacy as an apprentice , which was located at the upper end of Leipziger Strasse . In this pharmacy, he ended his apprenticeship prematurely in the spring of 1813, as he volunteered for the military for the war against France . At the beginning of April 1813 he left Berlin with other volunteers under the leadership of Captain Ernst von Kesteloot ; the troops took part in the battle of Großgörschen on May 2, 1813. Louis Henri was hit by a bullet in this battle, but it got stuck in his wallet.

Six years later, on March 24, 1819, he married his fiancée Emilie Labry. Their first child Heinri Théodore Fontane, known under the name Theodor Fontane , was born in Neuruppin on December 30th of the same year .

To settle gambling debts, Louis Henri Fontane had to sell the Fontane birthplace in Neuruppin with the Löwen pharmacy in 1826 , and shortly afterwards the family moved to Swinoujscie in 1827 . From 1838 Fontane ran a pharmacy in Letschin im Oderbruch, where his son completed part of his apprenticeship as a pharmacist and later also worked as a writer during numerous stays. The novella Unterm Birnbaum is about Letschin.

His grave is near the church in Neutornow , a district of Bad Freienwalde (Oder) , where he spent his retirement years apart from his wife.
